Tick bites and Lyme disease

Lyme disease is a tick-borne disease caused by a bacterium. It often starts with a red rash and a red ring around the bite, but not always. You may also have a fever, headache, and muscle or joint pain. In addition to the symptoms of infection, you may also experience nausea, weight loss, pain in the arms, legs, neck, or back, or temporary facial paralysis. Lyme disease cannot be vaccinated against, but it can be treated. Untreated Lyme disease can spread throughout the body and lead to serious consequences..

Why should I get tested for Lyme disease?

It can be difficult to detect Lyme disease from a tick bite, some people don't even know they've been bitten. Symptoms usually appear two to six weeks after the tick bite. Sometimes it can take up to three months. The symptoms are quite general and only half of all Lyme disease infected people get a red ring or redness around the bite. These patients usually receive treatment quickly. However, if you have more diffuse symptoms that are not visible, it may take a while before the infection is even discovered. A positive Lyme disease test (you are infected with the Lyme disease bacterium) means that you can seek care and receive the right treatment more easily and quickly, which is important as Lyme disease can cause serious complications. If you suspect or know that you have been bitten by a tick and are worried about Lyme disease, a rapid test can calm your concerns. Note: Quicktest Borrelia test does not make a diagnosis. A positive result indicates an infection and a doctor should be contacted for further investigation and treatment. The doctor’s view

Lyme disease is a bacterial disease spread by ticks. Most people experience fairly mild symptoms. After antibiotic treatment, most recover.

For others, the disease spreads to the nervous system, joints and other areas, and in these cases recovery can take longer. Detecting this bacterial disease early increases the chances of making a full recovery.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if it is Lyme disease?
The most common early symptom is a ring-shaped skin rash at the site of the tick bite. The rash usually appears 1-4 weeks after you have been bitten. However, a Lyme infection can also cause more diffuse symptoms such as fatigue, headache, joint pain, fever and chills.
What happens if Lyme disease is left untreated?
An untreated Lyme infection can cause serious complications and can spread to the nervous system, known as neuroborreliosis. Neuroborreliosis is our most common form of bacterial meningitis and is more common in children than in adults. In addition to fatigue, headache and nausea, common signs of neuroborreliosis include temporary facial paralysis and radiating pain.
When should the Lyme disease test be performed?
It is recommended to perform the test 2-4 weeks after a suspected tick bite or when a red mark appears where the bite occurred. Note that only 1-2% of tick bites result in Lyme disease. A positive result indicates a Lyme infection, and a doctor should then be contacted for further investigation and treatment.
Can the test be used to diagnose Lyme disease?
No. Our tests cannot be used to make a diagnosis; they are used to provide an indication. A diagnosis is always made by a doctor, often after various tests and clinical examinations. However, with our rapid test for Lyme infection, the infection can be detected early and treatment can be started quickly for the best effect.
How safe/reliable is the Lyme disease test?
Studies show a high reliability of 93%. Note that antibodies form after Lyme bacteria have been in the human body for some time. If the test is performed too soon after infection, your body may not yet have developed enough antibodies for the test to detect them. This can give you a 'negative' result even if you have Lyme disease. If you know you have been bitten by a tick, the recommendation is to take the test 2-4 weeks after the bite.
I recently took a course of antibiotics. Can the test still detect Lyme disease?
No, the test should not be used if you have recently taken antibiotics. Because our Lyme disease test detects antibodies produced to fight the infection, it may also detect an older infection.
Can I use the Quicktest Lyme Disease Test to test my dog/cat?
No, this self-test is calibrated for use in humans.
